I am in the middle of a time wasting to and fro with Copyright Agent UK Ltd. Having tried many times to speak to Melanie I think it is a bot. Their emails are rambling and vague. My suggestion is to take down any materials if they are are unlicensed immediately and ignore Copyright Agent UK Ltd and their threatening emails.

Copyright Agent is not a scam however its methods mean that they surf very close to the line using "shakedown" automated technology. To be absolutely clear, internet users should not use copyrighted images without prior permission and/or licence and there are plenty of free tools available out there to check the status of images. However, with tens of millions of images being published online every day in the UK alone, the use of copytighted images, accidentally or deliberately is likely to be very common. Put it another day, if you are walking down the public street and accidentally put one foot onto someones private land, you would not expect to be sued for trespass - it was an easily rectifiable mistake...and if you accidentally tramped on the owners Daffs, then the owner should be compensated for the cost of said Daffs! On my website, I spent an entire week checking that all the images were not subject to copyright. Copyright Agent however uses automated web crawling software which indexes websites and find pages that are not visible to the public - and guess what they found a image that was in an old test area of the site used for development, design experiments etc Of course the cease & desist letter was then automatically sent out demanding £700. I immediately of course removed the image and checked there were no more such images in non-public parts of my domain. But why £700? Why not £7m? Clearly it is a hugely inflated figure designed to frighten a small percentage of people top pay up -a classic shakedown So here is the clever thing that this company does - to find out more details of your claim you need to log on to a "case page" on their website - I have to admire them for this. By doing this they can save themelves a great deal of time and money by identifying cases that reached the intended target and have the recipients suitably worried to take action. Obviously their systems will then prioritise these cases. Personally I have no intention of doing this but no doubt many do. I am pretty conversant with, and a supporter of UK copyright law - if a case ever gets to court, standard damages for innocent infringement are based on the "reasonable license fee" i.e. what a user would have paid to license it legally, normally £5 to £50. I would very like much like Copyright Agent to take me to court, but as it will cost their solicitor £££ + VAT just to get out of bed, alas I doubt his will happen. In fact their UK company has only recently avoided being stuck off at Companies House. So in conclusion - dont break copyright law. If you have been shown to have done it, remove the images immediately. Do not engage with this company or offer any settlement if you are an innocent and minor offender

Paid an agreed amount (lot less than they were asking) I have emailed several times for a receipt of my payment to them which have been ignored with not even an acknowledgement to the emails.... So yes I think I was scammed (my fault) buy Copyright agent.

Totaal onbereikbaar.
