Incorrect insurance information cost me approximately 2.5x my original rental price I have rented with SIXT several times and previously had good experiences, but my recent rental from SIXT Dublin Airport was extremely disappointing. When I arrived to pick up my vehicle, I intended to use the rental car insurance included with my Scotia Gold American Express card. At the counter, I was specifically told that my AMEX insurance did not cover rentals in Ireland. I questioned this for approximately 30 minutes because I believed my card did provide coverage. However, the SIXT staff maintained that it did not. I was then given the choice of purchasing SIXT's additional insurance or providing a security deposit of approximately €5,000. I purchased the additional insurance, which added approximately €400 to my rental and resulted in my total cost being about 2.5 times the price of my original reservation. When I returned to Canada, I contacted Scotia/AMEX to verify what SIXT had told me. They confirmed that my rental car insurance DID cover Ireland, and I obtained the insurance certificate confirming it. I contacted SIXT Ireland, provided the documentation and requested reimbursement of the additional insurance. Instead of addressing why I was given incorrect information at the counter, their response was essentially that SIXT Ireland is a franchise with different terms and that once a rental agreement has been signed, they cannot change it. That completely misses the point. I am not disputing their right to have different deposit requirements in Ireland. My complaint is that I signed the agreement and purchased approximately €400 of additional insurance AFTER being incorrectly told by SIXT staff that my existing AMEX insurance did not cover Ireland. I even asked SIXT Ireland directly to explain why their employee told me my AMEX coverage was invalid when AMEX confirmed the opposite. I still have not received a satisfactory answer. The employees at Dublin Airport were polite and professional, and my previous experiences with SIXT had been good. Unfortunately, the incorrect information I received and SIXT Ireland's handling of my complaint afterward have completely changed my opinion of the company.

I have been scammed on a vehicle return at Dublin airport and was told by email all returned successfully and return receipt attached. No mention of damage in the email or photos. I did not open the receipt I admit as thought it was standard receipt and I was travelling when I got it. Some over 2 weeks later I got a bill for 2, 700 euros for a scratch and this was the first I had seen or been made aware of the alleged damage I had caused. They works were extensive for a scratch and R&R the bumper, radiator grille and fog lights and the car got a new signature badge. The phots indicates scratch above the wheel only. Sixt will not provide me with any explanation for such works and will not even answer me. It is going to the credit card company now as a Section 75 consumer matter. This is a total scam and the charges are like the wild west. Stay away from Sixt Ireland.

When to pick up our car at Dublin Airport and went to the sixt depo and was helped by Ray. A lovely friendly man who went out of his way to help us and make sure our experience was perfect. He explained every step to us. Thank you Ray.

Pre booked, prepaid. Would not provide car because I use debit card instead of credit card. My bad, didn't pay close enough attention to ts and cs. Now refusing to refund me, basically stolen my money. Do not rent from them.

I picked up my car from Sixt on August 7th, and the tone was set from the moment I walked into the agency. The staff were unwelcoming, and I immediately felt like I was being sized up as a revenue stream rather than a customer - pressure to purchase add-ons, with a clear agenda to squeeze every extra euro out of me. Nonsensical insurance exclusions: I opted for Sixt's minimum deductible because I'm already covered up to €50,000 through my bank. This left me with a €2,000 franchise, fine. But here's the catch: tyres and glass breakage are excluded from that deductible. Who offers a deductible option that doesn't cover the two things most likely to be damaged on a rental car? This alone tells you everything about the spirit behind Sixt's pricing strategy. The "Prepaid Fuel" trap: The staff pushed the Prepaid Fuel option (€71), assuring me I'd save money because Sixt has its own cheaper pump. What they conveniently omit: this option is only economical if you return the car with the tank completely empty. Otherwise, you've essentially gifted Sixt free fuel, as they do not refund any excess petrol. On top of that, the supposed "cheaper fuel" is pure fiction - I refilled the tank myself and it cost €72. So much for the discount. A near-empty tank on pickup: Despite paying for "prepaid fuel," I drove five minutes before the fuel warning light came . There was roughly 5 km worth of petrol left in the tank. I had to call customer service and fill up myself before I could even begin my trip - effectively paying for fuel twice. Inflated deposits and mystery charges: Like all rental companies, Sixt debits eye-watering amounts for incidentals. The toll road around Dublin costs about €2 per crossing. Sixt took a €100 deposit for that. The gap between actual cost and what they hold is staggering, and good luck getting a clear breakdown of what you've been charged versus what you're being refunded. GPS upsell - for a car that already has GPS: The staff tried to sell me a GPS option for €140. I declined. Five minutes later, I discovered the car already had a built-in navigation system. Had I accepted, I would have paid €140 for absolutely nothing. This perfectly encapsulates the experience: every interaction is designed to extract money, regardless of whether you actually need what they're selling. Return and customer service runaround: I returned the car on August 19th with zero issues on the condition report. I requested both a cancellation of the Prepaid Fuel option and a refund for the fuel I left in the tank - after all, I saw no reason to gift Sixt several liters of petrol when they had already degraded my entire rental experience. As of August 26th - over a week later - customer service is still pretending not to understand the second part of my request regarding the unused fuel. It's painfully obvious this is deliberate stonewalling. The broader picture: I don't believe the car rental industry offers anyone a genuinely great experience. The entire sector feels riddled with practices that hover at the edge of legality - opaque pricing, incomprehensible invoices, aggressive upselling, deductibles designed to be useless, and customer service trained to be uselessly polite while resolving nothing. My verdict on Sixt: They are not worse than their competitors. But they are significantly more expensive, for a service that is just as poor and practices that are just as dishonest. My advice? If you have no choice but to rent a car, go with the cheaper option. At least then you know exactly what you're paying for - mediocrity at a fair price, rather than mediocrity at a premium.
