A Beautiful Vintage Chronograph with Genuine Character
I’ve finally received my Seagull 1963 Icon II, and after spending some time with it, I can say that the watch has exceeded my expectations. The dial is unquestionably the highlight for me. The deep blue changes considerably depending on the lighting, sometimes appearing almost black and at other times becoming a rich, vibrant blue. Combined with the champagne subdials and outer track, polished applied markers and bright red chronograph hand, there is an incredible amount of depth and character without the dial feeling overly busy. The case is also beautifully proportioned. Despite being a chronograph, it has a distinctly vintage feel on the wrist and doesn’t come across as oversized or bulky. The polished case, domed crystal and pump pushers all work together wonderfully and give it the appearance of a genuinely classic mechanical chronograph rather than a modern watch simply trying to look retro. One of my favourite aspects is how much the watch changes depending on the strap. I replaced the stock strap with a custom distressed blue racing leather strap, and for me it completely transformed the watch. The combination of the blue dial, champagne details, red chronograph hand and vintage racing strap is exactly the aesthetic I was hoping for. There are certainly more expensive chronographs with more prestigious names on the dial, but that isn't really the point of this watch. The Icon II has an enormous amount of personality. It feels distinctive, slightly unusual and genuinely fun to wear. Most importantly, I keep finding myself looking down at my wrist simply because I enjoy looking at it — and ultimately that is probably the best compliment I can give a watch. I’m extremely happy with my purchase.
