Disappointing and underwhelming
This is a review for "The Music of Lord of the Rings, a Tribute to Howard Shore" at Truro Cathedral. I really wanted to enjoy this, but unfortunately came away very disappointed. The biggest problem was simply the sound. The ensemble was too small to fill a space like Truro Cathedral and the music often felt distant and surprisingly quiet. The audience were doing their best to remain silent, but you could hear chairs creaking, people coughing and even people breathing over the music. At one point somebody accidentally knocked over a bottle and the noise was so prominent by comparison that much of the audience laughed. It completely drowned out the musicians for a moment, which rather summed up the problem. I also found the programme and arrangements quite confusing. Rather than feeling like a musical journey through Middle-earth, it jumped around considerably: from the main theme to the Shire, through several variations of Concerning Hobbits, then to music associated with the Elves at Helm's Deep, back to the Shire, on to the Houses of Healing, and later Sauron/Saruman. That's obviously partly personal preference, but there seemed to be very little attempt at musical storytelling or creating a coherent journey through the trilogy. The omission of the Rohan theme was particularly baffling given how beautifully suited that music is to strings. There was also a surprisingly long section, perhaps ten minutes, consisting largely of drones and atmospheric background music. Those pieces work wonderfully in the films, where they're supporting important scenes and dialogue, but in a concert lasting only around an hour it felt like an odd use of the limited running time when so much of Howard Shore's extraordinary score was left untouched. Unfortunately, the performance itself was also inconsistent. There were some very noticeable timing and dynamic problems, as well as a couple of prominent mistakes. They weren't subtle enough to go unnoticed, on more than one occasion I saw members of the audience turn to one another and grimace. Truro Cathedral should have been a magnificent setting for Howard Shore's music, and I went in genuinely excited to hear it there. Instead, the small ensemble, extremely restrained sound, strange selection and sequencing of pieces, and some noticeable performance problems made the whole thing feel underwhelming. I came away feeling that I'd heard fragments of a remarkable score rather than been transported back to Middle-earth, which is a great shame.

Cancelled evening no refund
We booked tickets to Miyazaki evening by Mystery Ensemble at Bradford Cathedral. We arrived to find a number of other people trying to find the entrance and work out how to get in. As the lights were off we looked online to see what was happening, as we had received nothing from Red Events. On a Facebook post (!) the event had been cancelled! We'd travelled to Bradford for this and had no idea. None of the other people had received an email either. I communicated with Red Events via their Facebook account, try kept saying someone would be in touch, etc etc. Eventually they said we could go to the same event in Manchester, however we were abroad on that date. After many more messages back and forward, they said they'd refund our tickets MINUS A CANCELATION FEE! We hoped for some slight compensation for such inconvenience and incompetence. Still nothing refunded to date. Avoid this scam company at all costs
