I am unfortunately disappointed with the handling of my recent order. I ordered from OwlCrate and paid VAT at checkout as required for EU shipments. However, when the parcel arrived in Denmark, PostNord issued additional import VAT and handling fees. After contacting PostNord, they confirmed in writing that no IOSS information had been transmitted electronically with the shipment, which caused the parcel to be treated as a standard import shipment. I contacted OwlCrate support before the customs payment deadline expired and provided documentation from PostNord, the customs charge, and all relevant information. I also followed up before the deadline, but unfortunately did not receive a response in time, and the parcel has now been returned to sender. I completely understand that mistakes with international shipping can happen, especially with changing regulations, but I would have appreciated a response before the deadline expired. I am still hoping OwlCrate can help resolve this.

Let me preface this by saying I have been a loyal subscriber of OwlCrate for 8 years. My favorite author’s book This Kingdom will Not Kill Me was the April fantasy book. I reached out to OwlCrate and inquired on what I needed to do to get a copy, since fantasy was not one of my subscriptions. Crystal responded in writing that I just needed to join the adult fantasy waitlist. She assured me that the book would first be offered to people on the waitlist. I joined the waitlist and even purchased a six-month subscription. The other day I was shocked to read on Instagram that OwlCrate sold all leftover copies of the book on their website. They claimed that these were the leftovers after clearing the waitlist. Multiple people left comments on the OwlCrate post refuting the claim. Many straight up called it a lie. I can’t find that Instagram post anymore; I believe they removed it. I reached out to Crystal to ask why I hadn’t been given an opportunity to purchase overstock. She claimed that the book was offered to everyone on the waitlist, essentially doubling down on the false narrative they posted online. I pushed back and was ghosted. I know this may not seem like a big deal to some people, but I have spent a lot of my hard-earned money on multiple OwlCrate subscriptions. I watched this company grow over the years and put my faith and my loyalty in them. An apology would have gone a long way. Instead, they continued perpetuating a lie and didn’t even try to make things right. Why would I continue to support them? I know I am only one person, and I will not impact their sales at all, but I’m canceling all my subscriptions.

Ordered a book set for 150 bucks got an email it was shipped but hadn't heard from them since, a couple of months later I checked through a different app and saw it was marked as delivered, I immediately contacted them upon finding out and after a lot of back and forth it came down to Them not providing proof of delivery telling me they failed to deliver cuz nobody was home (no proof of delivery) and they recieved the item back and are holding on to it whilst refusing a refund because their refund policy has a deadline, despite then having my item and my money they say it's resolved and it isn't their fault I wasn't informed because they don't do follow ups when they fail a delivery and get their items back and that they wish I contacted them sooner.

The books are lovely. I have 3 of them. My experiences communicating with Owclrate have been awful, and I kept my subscription for only 2 weeks as a result.

Owlcrate does not care about their EU customers. This is incredibly clear by the fact that even after repeated issues for EU customers getting charged VAT on delivery in spite of paying at checkout, Owlcrate refuses to take responsibility for the mistakes they are making which cause this and have done nothing to prevent it from happening again. I had several purchases from them which all made it through customs without issue, so I hoped that the problems they are known for with this were in the past. Until January, when one of my orders got stuck in customs. I first spoke to the postal service and showed them my receipt from Owlcrate which showed I paid VAT at purchase. They replied and said with the IOSS system, it is the sender (Owlcrate)'s responsibility to submit the electronic file with the correct information. I then wrote to Owlcrate support, and ELEVEN days later, support replied and shared an invoice with their IOSS number on it. I tried sending this to my postal service, who then replied and let me know Owlcrate/their shipping partner had put the IOSS in the wrong field and it was not able to be fixed after the fact. This is pretty clearly a mistake made by Owlcrate/their shipping partner. After multiple WEEKS of back and forth with 5-7 day delays between responses, Owlcrate refuses to even refund the VAT amount I paid twice (which is around €2 in total excluding the processing fees, so objectively a small amount) and even worse, insists they always file their customs forms accurately and do not have any issues on their end. This is objectively false - I order from multiple non-EU special edition book boxes, and I get shipments from all of them regularly. Not a single one of them, except for Owlcrate, has a reputation of mismanaged IOSS submissions. Not a single one of them, except for Owlcrate, has led me to have to pay for customs on arrival. Not a single one of them, except for Owlcrate, has the postal service explicitly stated the shipper submitted the customs form wrong. The absolute lack of accountability is abhorrent. The 5+ day wait time between responses is abhorrent. The insistence that they have made no mistakes, to the point they have added a page to their FAQ about this (which again indicates how frequently this occurs), is abhorrent. This does not happen with other book boxes! I have gotten more orders total from The Broken Binding, Fairyloot, and Illumicrate, yet not once have I ever incurred a request for customs from anyone but Owlcrate. Check Reddit and social media and the first thing you'll see if people are talking about Owlcrate is how they mismanage their customs reporting, leading to EU buyers getting double VAT charges. Owlcrate does not care about their EU customers. If they did, they would be doing more to rectify this problem by, for starters, ACKNOWLEDGING it is a problem. Until that time, I heavily recommend against purchasing from Owlcrate if you are not based in the US.

Auch nicht für Geld. Unclaimed ist fair. Claimed gibt das Mikrofon — nicht den Radiergummi.
