I would not recommend Open University at the moment. When you see senior members of staff are leaving it should be regarded with caution. The once great institution now is no longer value for money. For example £4,088 for a part-time years study that you can buy online for under £100. From three years part-time study I have proved I am of good academic standard. That’s all I really wanted to do. Would I pay for another three years of dissatisfied service amounting to nearly £14,000 when you include extra costs absolutely not. In level two you are not provided with any oral communication with your tutor unless it approved through a line manager which is stressful and difficult. E-mails for me were only glanced at by my tutor and often the reply made no sense. Tutor liked to remind me that she had a proper job in a brick university where she gave students more of her time. Total inconsistency with marking, you can’t rely on past performance as their marking can change on a whim. When talking to other students the frustration with an inconsistency with marking causes great concern. For employers a students grade is only down to whims of a particular tutor, so I would not trust a students grade from OU. Please note marking is not in-line with other Universities. There is also no complaints procedure of any value as it is designed with its rigidity to discard any really issues. Basically, the complaints system is a brick wall with the computer says no attitude. All in all I can’t see Open University being viable or fit for purpose in the next ten years. So to anyone looking at a University look at its economic viability before investing in the establishment. Please note I am in the very fortunate position that I can take my complaint to the next level outside the University complaints rigidity. I have enough evidence and support to take it all the way. I am also very fortunate that I already have a degree and postgraduate so can approach my complaint with honesty, with no fear of harming my future prospects. To the younger students of Open University today I must apologise about my flippancy of your concerns, you deserve more. I will now continue to fight for you and your rights for a decent education. My reply from them is what I expected. I am concerned about them being proud of receiving TEF Gold award for teaching excellence. My teaching excellence included one phone call which I had to fight for with tutor in the whole year. Six viable tutorials as all tutors did their tutorial on the same subject (only on writing TMA and EMA) plus replies to e-mails which were not read properly. Best examples being when I asked about punctuation she referred me to their book which you can buy cheaply on Amazon and the punctuation was not in U.K. English. Oh and asking about EMA piece and they failed to recognise what I was asking and therefore advise was inaccurate. So I think TEF award is a bit of rubbish. So one call, six tutorial, a few misread emails, a book you can buy on Amazon and IT work that you can get on YouTube, well I think OU is a little bit delusional. Oh and a marking system that is exceptionally inconsistent. Can I asked why you refused to read my evidence and just look at a computer system? Anyway apparently their complaint system according to other students is to say NO at each stage hoping you will get bored and drop it. I am going to carry on sorry guys. Basically, I complained during the year and something suspicious has happened.

I had high hopes for The Open University, believing their reputation for being inclusive and welcoming to everyone. Instead, my experience before the module even started has been deeply disappointing. Their disability support team expects students with severe screen-reading barriers to accept bulky, unformatted, loose black-and-white webpage printouts instead of proper, bound course books. When you try to explain that this creates entirely new physical and organisational hurdles, you are met with rigid gatekeeping. The "digital-first" shift is clearly just a cost-cutting measure that makes higher education a hostile, inaccessible place for disabled people. I have chosen to cancel my registration entirely rather than fight an uphill battle against a system that fails to provide basic, functional adjustments. The responses I received were designed to put me off and made me feel that I was a nuisance and that my problems did not deserve appropriate and fully supportive assistance. Shame on you Open University. Your reputation is now in the bin.

Having a penalty letter is like having a dunce hat on steroids. If I started walking around with that hat . People are not going to think highly of me. I'll give the ou the benefit of the doubt for welcoming me back and award them 5 stars again.
