In the beginning it was great, now is meh
I used Notion application on Desktop and iOS in the past and really liked the whole concept and the product stack. It felt flexible, simple, and genuinely useful. But somewhere along the way, they took the product in a directon I don't really like. Over the last few years, it's become increasingly complicated, with more and more sales features and upsells being pushed into the experience. It's also gotten pretty expensive. I still think the foundation is great, but these days it feels like a product that started strong and gradually lost its way.

Promising product, frustrating onboarding and slow, incomplete customer support
A frustrating start to what looks like a promising platform. I wanted to trial Notion as a potential operating system for my business, but what should have been a straightforward onboarding process became unnecessarily confusing around startup offers, partner programmes, account logins and workspaces. At one stage I effectively ended up with duplicate account/workspace contexts, including one created through Sign in with ChatGPT and another tied to my business email. That left me unclear about which workspace actually contained the promotional trial and, more importantly, where I should start building and testing the product. Support has been polite, but responses have generally taken around a day and several issues have required repeated clarification. A meaningful part of my 30-day trial has therefore elapsed before I have been able to start properly evaluating the platform. The experience has also prompted me to look more seriously at the alternatives. For a finance professional looking for relationship management, project workflows, knowledge management and AI, there is now a strong and growing range of competing products, alongside increasingly practical options for building more bespoke internal systems. Notion itself still looks potentially very capable, which is why the difficult onboarding experience is particularly disappointing. I hope the remaining issues can be resolved quickly so I can finally assess the product on its merits.
