NEVER rent a car from Fair Car. We arrived at the airport in Reykjavík at midnight, but there was no car. After a long wait, we finally managed to speak to a staff member and were told that the reservation had been cancelled. He couldn't explain why and refused to help us; he was very eager to end the conversation. We had to find a nearby hotel ourselves. We tried in vain to contact them to get them to pay for the hotel room. I had to drive to their office in Reykjavík to speak with them. I encountered a very rude employee who refused to help in any way; he claimed they had sent us an email about the cancellation, yet he couldn't show it to me. It is a scam company.

My experience with Faircar Iceland was disappointing, mainly due to the lack of customer service. Airport Pickup: After landing at the airport, there was no Faircar representative waiting for arriving customers. One representative eventually arrived and took a single group of passengers. If you happened to miss that shuttle, there were no signboards, instructions, or staff available to guide you. You were simply left waiting without knowing when the next pickup would arrive. When I contacted them via WhatsApp, the responses were brief and unhelpful—essentially just, “Someone will come.” That is not the level of communication or professionalism I expect from a car rental company. Fuel Policy: When returning the vehicle, if the fuel tank is not completely full, Faircar not only charges for the missing fuel but also adds a €50 surcharge. I have rented cars in many countries, and I have never encountered such a steep additional fee for refuelling. The customer service representative initially allowed me to fill up the tank at a station right across the road, but then changed their mind, saying we would be late and did not let me proceed. It would have taken only about 5 minutes to complete. Vehicle Condition: The car itself was average at best. One of the power windows was faulty—it was difficult to open, and once opened, it was a struggle to close again. The vehicle clearly had maintenance issues that should have been addressed before it was handed over. Toll Charge Handling: Faircar sent an invoice first for an unpaid toll, which I immediately questioned because I had already paid it. After contacting the toll authority directly, they promptly confirmed the payment and refunded me where appropriate. Despite this, Faircar had already added administrative charges, charged my credit card immediately, and was largely unresponsive when I tried to resolve the matter. The issue could have been handled far more fairly and professionally. Overall: Faircar may offer attractive rental prices, and if saving money is your only priority, it may be worth considering. However, be prepared to compromise on customer service and after-sales support. Based on my experience, communication is poor, issues are not handled proactively, and you should expect to resolve most problems on your own. I hope Faircar improves its customer service because that, more than the price, is what customers remember after their trip.

FairCar Iceland – A Complete Failure of Customer Service and Accountability I rarely leave negative reviews, but after everything that has happened, I feel other customers deserve to know my experience before deciding whether to trust FairCar Iceland with their holiday. I booked and fully prepaid a rental vehicle months in advance for my trip to Iceland. My reservation was confirmed, and I arrived at Keflavík International Airport expecting to collect the vehicle I had paid for. Instead, I was informed that my booking had been cancelled, despite receiving no prior notification and having a valid prepaid reservation. I was left stranded at the airport at the start of a planned tour of Iceland with no vehicle. I had no realistic option other than to hire another car immediately from a different company at airport prices. This cost me an additional £907, a substantial and completely avoidable expense caused solely by FairCar's failure to provide the vehicle I had contracted and paid for. Initially, FairCar handled the complaint professionally. They investigated, accepted responsibility for what had happened, apologised, and confirmed in writing that they would refund my original rental payment and reimburse the additional cost of the replacement vehicle. They requested my bank details, which I supplied immediately. Unfortunately, that is where the professionalism ended. Despite their written commitment, no reimbursement arrived. Weeks passed. I sent polite follow-up emails. I received little or no response. I issued a formal Letter Before Action. That too was ignored. Eventually, I had no alternative but to begin formal proceedings. The original rental payment has since been recovered through my card provider after they accepted my dispute and issued a provisional refund. However, FairCar still has not honoured its separate written agreement to reimburse the additional £907 that I was forced to spend because they failed to supply the contracted vehicle. As a result, I have now lodged formal complaints with the appropriate consumer authorities, including the Icelandic Complaints Board and the UK International Consumer Centre (UKICC). What disappoints me most is not that a mistake occurred. Businesses make mistakes. What matters is how they respond afterwards. FairCar admitted the mistake, accepted responsibility, promised to reimburse my losses, requested my banking details, and then failed to honour that promise. Had they simply done what they agreed to do, none of this would have been necessary. I have spent months compiling evidence, corresponding with the company, pursuing reimbursement, and escalating the matter through formal consumer protection channels—all because FairCar failed to honour a commitment they themselves made in writing. I sincerely hope no other customer experiences the same situation. If you choose to rent from FairCar, I would strongly recommend keeping copies of every email, every confirmation, and every receipt, as you may need them if something goes wrong. I will happily update this review if FairCar finally honours their written agreement and reimburses the outstanding costs. Until then, based on my experience, I cannot recommend this company.
