I endured Donkey Republic for a week only because I was staying in Diemen, just outside Amsterdam, where no other rental bikes were available. Someone from their team did take the time to write back after my initial review, but their wording remains totally confusing, and nothing actually improved. They never answered my questions satisfactorily, despite my telling them I'm a journalist and would be including this experience in a story for a platform that reaches over 500 million readers a month. The questions were simple: what exactly are the terms of a €5 monthly Amsterdam membership? I was charged and issued a card that said "€5 / 24 hours," which I reasonably took to mean 24 hours of riding. Nowhere does it say there are no free minutes included at €5 a month. Their own materials state “€5 charge after extra minutes,” but nowhere do they list that there are zero minutes included — so “extra” is meaningless. Nowhere do they explain their parking rules either, or their automatic ride-end rules. The wording is entirely misleading. On the first day, I was stranded in the middle of central Amsterdam at night, unable to get home or make it to a business meeting, after I asked what the €5 charge was for. Rather than explain it, they simply ended my ride instead of applying what would apparently have been a €40 fine. When I complained, they offered to refund the membership — I said I still needed it, since it was my only transport option from Diemen. They kept repeating the refund offer anyway. So today, once I no longer needed it, I told them to go ahead and refund it. They then wrote back to say no, because I'd "used it all week" — the exact week I'd spent trying to get them to actually resolve the problem. This isn't a language barrier. It's a genuinely confused, mismanaged company that strands and mishandles its customers, hides its own terms, and contradicts its own offers when you finally take them up on one. For anyone in a similar spot: the only real alternative is the Dutch national OV-fiets bike scheme, but that requires arranging an OV-chipkaart in advance. It's a shame Amsterdam doesn't allow other bike-share operators like Lime or Voi to compete here — neither currently operates bike-sharing in the city, which leaves residents and visitors with far fewer options than they should have.

I would also like to say that the people who assisted me were extremely helpful, understanding, and attentive throughout the whole process. They were always willing to help, and it was truly a pleasure interacting with them. I sincerely appreciate their kindness and professionalism

Their bikes always occupied the parking slots for cargo bikes, at least in Antwerp, likely because the app point to this exact place.

We decided to rent bikes because we were running late for an appointment at a specific time. We had downloaded the apps in advance and entered all the required information, but the app was still having trouble connecting to the bikes and unlocking them. In the end, we probably would have got there faster if we had just walked…:)))) The cherry on top, however, was that we also had trouble locking the bikes. When we finally managed to lock them, the app told us that we couldn’t leave them there and that they could only be parked in designated areas, which were far away from where we were going. We were then charged for another two hours because we had no way of ending the rental earlier. This was our first time using a service like this, and it will definitely be our last. An app that barely works and keeps claiming that the Bluetooth isn’t working (when it clearly was), bikes that were so rickety they looked like they could fall apart at any moment, and, on top of all that, we paid more than we would have for a taxi. I wouldn’t recommend this service to anyone. Just walk.

Auch nicht für Geld. Unclaimed ist fair. Claimed gibt das Mikrofon — nicht den Radiergummi.
